A Peek Behind the Curtain: Hospitality Renovation Project Management

At Case & Associates General Contractors, we pride ourselves on our reputation of completing our hospitality renovation projects on time, every time. We believe that transparency is key to any collaborative effort. With that in mind, this month, we’re giving a peek behind the renovation construction curtain to discuss project management. While managing a construction project consists of identifying tasks and tracking milestones, it’s so much more than that! Here are a few key concepts to remember during hotel renovation project management.

Label Your Tasks

Putting the tiny details into writing will let you reflect on your plan and confirm that a task has been completed.

It may seem tedious at first but label all of your tasks! When we say “all”, we mean it – down to the little details, put your tasks into writing. This will let you see every single step you need to complete to reach your completion goal. Putting the tiny details into writing will let you reflect on your plan and confirm that a job is properly planned at the onset, but it will also prove that everything has been completed in the end. Start by listing the major tasks for completion. Look over the construction plan and talk to department heads to get the full scope of the project. From there, break down each of those tasks into more manageable pieces. Consider all types of tasks, not just physical ones, such as inspections or approvals. Although some tasks may be more crucial to the completion of the project, think of each task as a vital part of the project, and each needs to be completed before moving on to the next. Here’s the most important part: make sure that you share progress on this task list between the team, supervisors, and ESPECIALLY the clients! At Case and Associates, we prepare daily progress reports with photos and explanations of all work done. These reports include progress, obstacles identified, and more.

Make A Timeline

Creating tasks without a timeline leaves a lot of responsibility in the air. Same with the task-creating process [...]

Put your tasks into a timeline after labeling! Consider the completion date of the next project. Are some tasks more time-sensitive than others? What is a reasonable time to complete this task by? Creating tasks without a timeline leaves a lot of responsibility in the air. Same with the task-creating process, determine a timeline for each task no matter how small.  But as you make this timeline, ensure you are realistic with the timing. You may only give a short time to complete a specific task because, with your experience, you think it is reasonable, but consider the team’s experience and mistakes that can happen along the way. The most important part of a timeline is meeting it! At Case and Associates, we value underpromising and overdelivering – allowing for enough room to comfortably finish a project. Our goal is to exceed expectations, and this is a great way to make sure every project is a success!

Use Visuals in Your Project Management

A visual chart or timeline of your project can put into perspective the tasks that need to be completed.

It always helps to see your plan displayed in different ways. A visual chart or timeline of your project can put into perspective the tasks that you need to complete. Seeing it visually helps move the order of functions because some tasks may need to be completed before others. Using visuals does not only mean making a calendar; it can also mean tracking your completion visually. Being able to see someone check off the completion of a task is not only gratifying, but it also lets the rest of the team know what has been done. We understand that everyone has a different project management style. When we work on restaurant renovation projects or hotel construction renovations, we make sure to meet our clients where they are – which means understanding their preferred communication style. Does your team live and die by GANTT charts? Do you tend to communicate with daily email updates? We want to know!
